End of Daily Dare

So today is the last day of Daily Dare and I will be getting a gold trophy and the bonus prize for beating all the game scores on release day! (as long as you beat it by the end of DD you still get a trophy, I got gold last year even though there were 2 games I couldn't get on release day)

So Saturday was Meerca Chase. You play as a Meerca and zip around the board collecting various colors of neggs and you avoid the red ones. This game is all about luck. They wanted 390. Well if you get a fish negg while playing on hard you win. If you get a power negg you get a big boost in points. I managed to get a power negg almost right away but lost at 344. Later I got another but lost at 320-something. I never did see a fish negg in my 1 1/2 hours of playing. Finally I won when I got a rainbow negg (like 100 points or something) and then got lucky with the placement of the red neggs. I won with 392. Whichever, at least I passed. My high score is 600-something but that was all luck in fish neggs and stuff.

Today's game was Faerie Bubbles! Yay! I was so worried we'd have a hard game! I spent this whole month refusing to start a book, at first in case a hard game came out and I had to put it down to play, then later because I was afraid of jinxing myself. Now it's over! Faerie Bubbles is where you have a shooter at the bottom and you shoot colored balls at other colored balls and every 5 shots the screen goes down and if the balls hit the bottom you lose. If you get 3 that match they go away, if you get 4+ that match you get a special thing. (fire bubbles foom and burn balls around them, water bubbles drip away and ALL the water bubbles on the screen do so not just the ones you hit, and so on) This game was on the DD last year and I learned the codes and the codes are really the only way I score high on that game. They wanted 976 I passed with 1,030.

So tomorrow I'll get my trophy and bonus prize. Yay! Then Festival of the Neggs starts for Easter. That will probably start next Monday, not tomorrow. I'm not really excited about it but it's still kinda fun. You get free stuff, so no complaints here.

Daily Dare catchup

Ok, I'm a little behind on talking about the Daily Dare so here goes with, like, the last week's worth of games:

Saturday was Ice Cream Machine. You play as a Chia and the mouse controls where you go. You're on a board and ice cream scoops go up and you have to avoid them. The avatar score is 14,000 but I can't seem to get past about 8,000. The DD AAA score was 6,045 and I beat it with 7,945. Easy. I like this game!

Sunday was Sophie's Stew. You play as a wand with a flat top and a witch throws ingredients over her shoulder and you have to catch and bounce them over to the cauldron. I'm pretty bad at this game and my average score is about 100. Thanks to last year's GMC score of 250 or something I can get a higher score than 100 it's just a pain. They wanted 262 for the DD and I got 264. Hey, at least I passed.

Monday was Shenkuu Warrior II. You start on the ground and hookshot grapple up to a ledge and this bounces you past it and you have to grab another ledge while falling. You can collect coins by running your mouse over them or hitting them with your character. This game was on the New Game Challenge last spring so I had a high score of 120,000 after a month of working on it. So I knew I could get the score of 69,543. I not only got that score I surpassed it and my previous high score with 148,298.

Tuesday was Ghost Bopper. I almost cried. It's basically that mole game with a mallet you hit the moles with when they pop up. Only it's ghosts. And some take more than one hit and others you can't hit at all or you lose a life. You can play it on a regular num pad on a real keyboard. If you're on a netbook or laptop without a numpad you can use letter controls. Not fun since it is nearly impossible to get a good score using letter controls. The numpad cages your fingers in a way the letter pad doesn't.  Also every few levels the controls change. Where 789 were the top row 147 is now the top. Or something. Which means you have to take your keyboard and turn it so those are the numbers on top, instead of the side. You can't do that with a netbook. Well, I had to wait till I got home then I grabbed my keyboard and beat it fairly quickly, within a half hour. They wanted 336 and I got 339. But only by using the keyboard. I tried letters it didn't work. Also apparently there was some huge glitch with the game and they extended the dare till the next day. I didn't have any issues.

Wednesday was Smug Bug Smite. You choose a weapon then wait and wait and wait till a bug pops out and you have to shoot it quick and then the second pops out. You get time bonuses, there's 3 levels, and a lot of problems. Sometimes you can sit there and wait and the 1st bug will pop out and your mouse is over it and it would literally take you 1/2 a second to shoot it and suddenly a popup comes and says you ran out of time and were too slow. The people on the forums were not helpful and kept telling people to get faster. o_0 I don't think they really understood the problem. I did cause it happened to me a lot. Well the score was 556 which is really, really hard. I beat it with 565 and all I can say for myself is that it was plain dumb luck. Playing as fast as you can normally gets you a score of about 400-450. At least for me. So I don't know what happened when I won except that I did and I won't question it.

Thursday was Trouble at the National Neopian. You are a bank teller and have 6 buttons that control 6 doors and you have to lock out the robbers. I had a bit of trouble with this game last year but passed. This year they wanted 527 to pass and I beat it with 534. Not bad but not great, last year's score was 550-something. But I'm ok with them dropping it. The game gets faster as you go along, though people who score in the thousands say after about 700 points the speed comes and goes in waves.

Today's game made me go "YES!" Sutek's Tomb! Oh, I've been waiting for this one!!! Basically bejeweled. My high score is 8,000-some. They only wanted 3,574 which is about what they wanted last year if I remember right. I passed easily this year first try with 6,822. I usually play this game a few times a week, but I usually average about 4,000 or so cause I don't usually try so hard.

Also the whole thing I mentioned before about bugs and the Games Room was all a NeoCash mini-plot. We got to read the story but we couldn't participate unless we bought stuff to do so. I'm not really upset since all it meant was you got to help decide what direction the store went in, but I think it all would have worked out the same anyway.

crochet booties

This is from February 28th. Boney helped me re-organize this shelf...

...which he apparently found quite boring.

Here is the playpen/bassinet combo. I put it together to see how it fit between the bed and dresser and how it went together. It's really easy. It all folds up and the mattress surrounds everything like a box and has velcro closings and then you put inside a carrycase (like a tent case). In this picture it's in bassinet form. We left it up for the cats to explore and they love it. Atton especially approves of the danglies. I am going to take it down and put it away, but I just wanted to see how it worked. It's really easy to set up. you just unfold it, snap the bars into place, and push the center down. Take down is as easy as the press of a button.

I made these today. My tension was great. Maybe it's cause I used regular hooks instead of the tiny steel ones, maybe it's cause of a different pattern, dunno. Maybe I'm holding it better, I did find a way to hold the yarn that I really like. Anyway the first one took a few hours cause I had a lot of trouble figuring out the top of the foot. I finally got two safety pins and used them as stitch markers. After that it was smooth sailing and the second one took 45 minutes. I used this pattern, if anyone's curious or if you stumble across this on google and want the pattern. You may need to create an account or sign in to see it but accounts are free.

More Daily Dare

Tuesday's game was Gwl's Great Escape. It is the buggiest game on the entire site. They wanted 890 for AAA, and my high score was about 600 I think. I used the cheat code (gwlsgreatestescapeever) to get the bonus level and that gave me a 200 point boost. I finally had to end game at 1,173 due to a glitch. In the game you blow air at a balloon that's tied to Gwyl and you move him around some caves to collect gems. If you touch the spikes you lose life. There are certain places where it is impossible to go through without touching spikes cause the passages are too small. Once you've collected the gems you can land on a platform to pass the level. The biggest glitch in the game is that the platform won't allow you to land on it and you'll pass right through it. This is what happened to me and caused me to end game when I did. Which was ok since I'd beaten the score needed. I believe I won on my first try.

Wednesday's game was Wrath of the Snowager. Which made me happy cause it's not only a very, very fun game, it's also a very easy one. It's basically worm, you play as the snowager and you go around collecting items dropped by a chia who's running around. You can hit the chia to make him drop 3 items at a time. Each item you pick up makes your tail grow longer. You die if you hit a wall or your tail. Last year's score was 600,000 and I doubled it.  This year? 186,472. Really? Yes, really. That's not the Abigale score? Nope, it was the AAA score.Alrighty then. First try I passed with 1,218,764. Everyone complained about how easy it was. I didn't cause I know complaining about easy scores last year got us stuck with Nova Defender with 700,000 points. (the average person gets about 200,000)

And I was right, cause Thursday's game was Super Hasee Bounce with 840! Eek! Everyone was complaining about how hard it was. And it was hard. Took me 3 hours to beat it. You play as 2 hasee's and you're on a seesaw. You bounce each other up to grab balloons, some of them have extra points in them or powerups that let you break blocks. You pass a level by grabbing all the letters to spell hasee. You die by missing the seesaw, which you can move back and forth to catch yourself. Last year's Games Master Challenge wanted 500 points for this game, and I really struggled to get even that much last year. This time, like I said, 3 hours. The points are random, you can pass the first level with anywhere from 30-110 points. And it's like that on each level. So it is entirely possible (and I even did it once with 810) to pass the entire game (15 levels) without ever reaching 840. All the people who were giving tips were telling people to aim. Aim for the point balloons then for the letters. But you can't aim. Maybe pros at the game can but I can't. It's impossible and it's actually cruel to expect newbies to be capable of aiming. The only tip that did me any good was to use mouse-controls instead of arrow keys cause it's faster. I do not believe I could have beaten the score without a mouse. When I finally did get the score it was with 928.

Today I went to see which game it was and saw KouJong. For a brief moment I panicked. Last year's KouJong stumped a lot of people and sent a lot of would-be Gold Trophy people down to Silver. Not as bad as Nova Defender, but it was still up there. Last year they wanted 800 points. I barely beat it after something like 8-9 hours of trying. I have played the game off and on since and gotten a high score of 958 or something. But anyway, today the score for AAA was only 493. Ha! I almost started laughing. KouJong is a timed version of mahjongg. There's 3 stages. Depending on how fast you clear the board you get bonus points. It's very unfair and you have to wind up resetting the board a lot. Resetting does not harm your score from previous stages so if you start running short on time you can simply reset to try again for more points. It's best to play on hard because it gives more points. The hardest thing about this game is having patience. Today I got the score in an hour. Actually I probably had it within 45 minutes at the end of the 2nd stage but I insisted on playing stage 3 too. I wound up with 925 points. Not a new high score but still a pretty awesome score for today. I usually average about 800ish now.

First troubling day of DD

So on Saturday we had Destructo-Match III. Basically a color matching game. I've been trying for the avatar (2,000 something) for some time now and just can't get past about 1,500. Lucky me they wanted 1,547. I beat it with 1,553, first try.

Yesterday was Meepit Juice Break. There are animals on a tree and pipe-starters on the other side of the screen, and you turn pipes to connect the starters to the meepits. I panicked. I am bad at that game. They wanted 1,860 and my high score was only about 1,200 or something. So, figuring I'd be at it a while I re-read the tips and codes and went to work. I was patient and calm and.... without using the codes wound up with 2,379!!! Whoa! Kinda makes me wonder what the score is to get the avatar. It can't be much further than that! And it was my first try that I beat it with too.

Today proved to be difficult. They chose Cooty Wars with a score of 670. Ick! This game is an fps and you shoot mootix as they parachute down. You need to get 20/25 to pass level 1, 30/35 to pass level 2, and so forth. The farther down the mootix is when you shoot it the higher you score, up to about 10 points I think. My high score was about 100. So I worked on it off and on today, actually not for so very long, only about an hour or so. The biggest issue was how laggy the game is! Sometime in level 4 or 5 it starts lagging so bad it's near impossible to get the score. Finally I read that a lot of other people are having issues too and some solve it by either changing screen size to large or small and I chose large and it worked! 698! It still started lagging on level 5 but I managed to salvage level 6 well enough to get my score!

writing reviews while half-awake = yay

So since Victor has been immersed in the world of Mass Effect 3 and I'm refusing to start reading a book for fear of finding myself with a Daily Dare game I need to spend a lot of time on, I have nothing to do in the evenings. So lately I've been rotting my mind in front of shows and movies. I watched some Happy Tree Friends one night. Jane Eyre (1996) another night, but no review of that till I've read the book so I can compare cause everything bad about that movie I am giving the benefit of the doubt due to not having read the book. And I watched other stuff I don't really remember what. Well tonight I asked Victor for suggestions and he as suggesting older romantic comedies so I thought why not. I went and looked for a romantic comedy and I got one, and I think it deserves a review.

So what I watched was Beauty and the Briefcase, starring Hilary Duff. Yes, that's right. I actually kinda like her. Albeit this is only the 4th movie I've seen her in. Anyway, I think it was really good. You could compare it to How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days but it is totally different. And between the two I much prefer this one. It was good and if I happen to see it for cheap somewhere (like in the 5 dollar bin at Wal-Mart) I wouldn't mind picking it up. I really can't think of much else to say that's not spoiler-ific, except that it was a good movie and had a good message after all. I will say, however, that the movie was rather clean. Maybe she takes her RL-marriage seriously or perhaps just doesn't do bed-scenes, but the most you see is some kissing, nowhere near a bed. So on to the spoiler review!

Daily Dare 2012

So at Neopets the Daily Dare was supposed to start March 1st but they rolled out a New Games Room instead. Dunno why since the old one wasn't broken but who knows, just improving things and updating stuff, it looks all fancy now. On one hand it's easier to navigate on the other it isn't. Hard to explain really, but in the old one there was a list to the side of the 5-6 most recently played games you've done, which was handy. Now I have to hunt for the games I play that aren't on my favorite's list. Which I could just update my list more often, cause now it's easier to get to.

Either way, they insisted there were bugs, which I didn't know anything about. For me all the games were running better so I had no issues. Then they took down the new games room and put the old one back up. After that I found out on the forums that people had been seeing actual purple bugs on their screens. And now that I know to look for them I'm seeing them too.

So with all this about new and old games room the "king" of the games room was pushing Daily Dare back and AAA (the leader of DD) wouldn't stand for it any longer and Daily Dare FINALLY started on March 7th at 4:30 my time. Which was bad for a lot of people since people in other countries were in bed and we had no way of knowing if the first half-day would run into 1 and 1/2 days or not. Luckily for those in other time zones it did.

Daily Dare is where AAA and his sister Abigail give you a score to beat on a game. AAA's is always harder, and you have to challenge one of them. If you beat their score you pass and if you don't beat the score by the end of DD you drop a trophy tier. Last year I got gold cause I beat all of AAA's scores.

The first game in the Daily Dare was Snowmuncher. You play a polar chuck (polar bear) who is eating blocks of ice to get to the bottom of the screen. Each block gives you 5% bloat and at 100% you lose a life. Along the way you get Bloat-B-Gone drink and gems. The score to get the avatar is 5,000. Because of Snowmuncher being part of 2011's DD I have a high score of 6,000-something. This year they only wanted 2,538 to beat AAA. I was out of practice so it took a few tries. But I beat the score with 4,093. Simple. I did have to use the bloat code (buuuurrrrrrrrp) that drops your bloat by 50%. But that's ok.

Today's game was Carnival of Terror. Which I feel lucky about. In December or January I decided to try for the avatar.  The score to get the avatar is 725 and it took almost a month but I got it. I used to average about 200-something. Now I average 450. AAA's score today was 354 and I beat it with 536. Not bad. Carnival of Terror is a shooter and clown robots go running past or drop on screen via umbrellas. They sometimes throw pies at you. You die by running out of time, ammo, or health. There is a code to restore you to full ammo (piecrust) and one to restore your health to full (custard). But there is no code for time. Basically there are only a few tricks to getting high scores (don't shoot clowns far away, ignore health bonuses and pies, shoot top, bottom, then middle of clown) but otherwise it's all about the bonuses. If you don't get time bonuses you'll probably wind up with a score of 350-400.

Apparently the bug thing is still going on cause Lulu (aaa and abigail's cousin she's a Neocash promoter and I don't do neocash) is going to "pick up some supplies" from the neocash store before going in search of the king of the games room to get help against the purple bugs. People keep thinking this will turn into a plot but I dunno. Bad timing for a plot cause those take a few months and we have Festival of the Neggs coming up at Easter followed by Altador Cup in June. Course they did do the GMC during the Faerie's Ruin plot I think back in 2010, so who knows. They could do it over the Festival of the Neggs but I really don't see them having it over the Altador Cup. So it would have to be a shorter plot, or an event like when Krawk Island sunk, that event only lasted a week or two.

1975 Secret Garden

I decided I wanted to watch something tonight and being unable to find anything I decided to try out that 1975 BBC version of The Secret Garden. It was entertaining. Like watching a taped live performance. You know, like a play. The sets looked to be entirely indoors, and kind of cheap. Like how when Martha grabs the railing and you see the entire thing shake and she steadies it so it won't fall over. Or how when Mary runs up some steps inn the garden you clearly hear that the grassy steps are quite wooden and hollow. But it is very faithful to the book, though I am disappointed the ivory figures room was left out.

One big thing I noticed is that the people at the imdb forums said it was about 3 or 4 hours long. Netflix says it's 1 hour and 48 minutes. How was this a tv show? Did it only run for 3 or 4 nights and that's where the confusion is?

A few things I would like to comment on:
When Nurse is laughing over Mary yelling at Colin if this were the more adult and humorous version I swear she would have actually said, "I don't know, I don't care, I've been into the sherry". I know that won't mean much to anyone who hasn't seen it but if I could have taped just those few moments I'd caption it and stick it on youtube for you but I don't know how to do that.

Colin is... cute. o_0 As in if I was 12 when I watched this I'd have had a crush on him. Bizarre. I looked him up on imdb and the actor hasn't done anything else since. Pity. Course I think a lot of the attraction is his hair. Suddenly I don't mind the Colin/Mary ship so much.

One observation about Colin though is that when he's first in the garden and ordering Dickon around my humorous version would have had him say, "Come here and **** me." Really, that was the look he was giving Dickon, like, "Well gosh, Mary wasn't kidding when she said you were an angel, and, well, I'm willing to go gay for you."

Loved how they used stock nature footage for the robin, that was fun. They're like talking to him and then suddenly it cuts to nature footage then back to the actors and it was amusing. I am glad they found an actual trained fox though. That was cute.

Also, I normally don't like it much when a normal movie has a musical part suddenly thrown in (unless it's tastefully done) but the India lullaby Mary sings is really good! It would almost make me fall asleep too.

Another thing I noticed is that Martha and John seem to like each other. In the book John was just some footman whom we see once or twice as he carries Colin to his chair. He's much more prominent in this movie. Martha also seems to be a lot older than I imagined. They altered Dickon's age too. He's supposed to be 12 but in the movie he's 13. I always assumed Martha was 16 or maybe 17 but in the movie she looked at least 20.

I don't remember the 1993 version so much but as compared to the 1975 one, I think I prefer the 1993. But that might just be cause I saw it as a kid. As for the 1989, I don't think anyone wants to watch that. I know a lot of people really like it but I hear they do some weird after-story about what happens to the characters during WWI and after that. I am glad to have seen this one though. Especially since it's actually a lot shorter than I'd thought it would be.

I made this today

fyi: Colongitude — Also called selenographic colongitude, it is the longitude of the Moon's morning terminator.
