Sarum, by Edward Rutherfurd
is another book I've picked up at the used book sale. It was published in 1987. It's basically a history of England told from the perspective of people living in Sarum/Salisbury. It starts off with prehistoric man and works its way forwards. It follows fictional families that are supposed to be typical of the people who were there. As you follow them through the centuries it's very interesting to see them interacting with each other and marrying into each other. To see power shifts happen. Traits passing on.There were definitely boring parts. Building the cathedral seemed to take forever. But then there are interesting parts too, such as the plague. While it does explain a lot of things for newbies, it also takes some knowledge for granted as being common, and a few times I felt lost, as though I'd skipped a chapter somehow. This book also inspired me to do some research. Several times I ran to google images to check something out.
While it did take a few months to read it, I am glad I did. However I don't think I'll be picking up any 1,000 page books for a while.
